Call for Submissions
TURN UP Multimedia Festival 2023
March 23-26, 2023 in Tucson, AZ
Submission Deadline: Oct. 1st, 2022
The University of Arizona invites composers (acoustic and electroacoustic) and multimedia artists of any age, gender identity, race, sex, ethnicity, religion, or national origin to submit works or presentations to be featured at the Spring 2023 TURN UP Multimedia Festival in Tucson, Arizona. Resubmissions due to the cancellation of 2022 events, please indicate in the submission form.
TURN UP promotes Equality, Culture-Connecting, and Interdisciplinary Collaboration. We encourage partnership between different fields, cultures, and genders. TURN UP includes multiple lectures, presentations, and master classes from leading artists from different fields, different circumstances, and different geographic areas, and culminates with multiple multimedia concerts that include the works of select artists. We want to TURN UP the volume and visibility of artists from underrepresented groups in music, art, and technology.
Each concert will feature an 8.1 speaker diffusion system and stage video projection system. TURN UP accepts all visual art/music works and live and immersive art works, but we especially seek works that fall within one of the following categories:
1) Acoustic works for five performers or less.
2) Instrument(s)/voice(s) and fixed media or live electronics with or without video.
Featuring performances by lyric soprano Yunah Lee and her students, and Faculty Artists of the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music.
Yunah Lee:
Lyric Soprano Yunah Lee is thrilling audiences in the U.S., Europe and Asia with her “handsomely colored full lyric sound” (Opera News) and “picture perfect” acting (Berkshire Fine Arts). "Lee deservedly earned the most vociferous ovation of the [Glimmerglass] festival as the audience leapt to their feet as one to roar their approval at her curtain call" (Opera Today). "[Director Francesca Zambello's] ability to get the voices she wanted is abundantly clear, especially with Korean-born lyric soprano Yunah Lee in the title role" (Syracuse New Times). "Lee is one of the world’s leading interpreters of the role. It’s hard to imagine a more nuanced, yet powerful delivery of this music..." (The Salt Lake Tribune)
*TURN UP will facilitate finding local performers, but will not guarantee to provide performers for all the selected pieces.
3) Works for fixed media and/or live electronics up to 8.1 with or without video.
4) Installations, interactive media, and any type of multimedia works (artist to provide all non-standard equipment).
5) Live and immersive art works or installations
Submission Guidelines:
1) Each composer/artist may submit no more than two compositions/works.
2) There is no duration limit for composition submissions; however, works with durations under 15 minutes will generally be given preference to allow for more works to be programmed.
3) For consideration, applicants must register and complete an online submission form available at HERE. Complete submission information and guidelines are available on the TURN UP website.
4) For adjudication purposes, multi-channel works (up to 8 channels) must be submitted as a stereo mix and uploaded at New Music Engine.
5) Selected artists will be notified by Nov. 1, 2022.
6) Selected artists will be asked to confirm attendance by Nov. 15, 2023.
7) All TURN UP Multimedia Concerts will be in person.
